TAKEN AT THE COLORADO SPRINGS AIR SHOW ON OCTOBER 4TH 2008:
July 6th, 2008 Today, I bought a 1945 "Stampe" Bi Plane. It is serial #49. I am a happy man AND I have a wonderful, brave wife! Here are some pictures:
This first set of pictures were taken on Monday June 30th, 2008. It started like any other day. I went to town in the TC and met a bunch of friends for a Little British Car Breakfast at Denny's. One of the other guys there was Ian Wayman, a friend who lives at Meadow Lake Airport. Ian's brother Don was the owner of the airplane and Ian told me it was for sale! Monday afternoon Anne and I went out and got our first view of the airplane. It reminded me a lot of my old DeHavilland Tiger Moth. The Stampe is French built and a bit smaller than the Tiger Moth. This particular one was built in 1945 and is serial number 49. After looking the airplane over Ian and I flew it up to Kelly Airpark, about 20 miles north of Meadow Lake. There we put it into a friends hangar and pulled a J-3 Cub out. We flew the Cub back to Meadow Lake. I had trouble sleeping that night. I have missed flying so much for so many years. I began to seriously think about ways to buy the airplane. It came down to selling the RV-8 project. I wrestled with the decision till Thursday. By then it was clear to me and to Anne that this was the right thing to do. Ian is a Frontier Airline Pilot so he was not back home till yesterday. Second from left on top row is me. Bottom row on the far right is Ian. NOTE: All of the following pictures are thumbnails. Click on any picture for a full size picture. We agreed to meet this morning. We drove up to Kelly Airpark and looked her over again. We were joined there by a good friend Don Sass and Eleanor from Parker, Colorado. Don is a long time aviation buff. I wanted Anne to ride in the airplane so Ian flew her back to Meadow Lake where we consummated the deal. She is now in my hangar. The following pictures were taken this morning at Kelly Airpark.
As soon as I get a few minor things done to the airplane and have had enough time to get familiar with it, we will be inviting all of our friends to the airport. This airplane is licensed in the: EXPERIMENTAL EXHIBITION CATEGORY! We will be giving free rides and accept any donations that our friends wish to give for fuel. It is not legal to sell rides in an EXPERIMENTAL airplane and I would not sell rides to my friends anyway. It is due to the fact that this airplane was manufactured in France in 1945 that the United States will not license it in NORMAL CATEGORY. The Stampe was originally manufactured in France as a Military Trainer. ANYONE WANT TO BUY AN RV-8 FASTBACK?
