A BRIEF HISTORY OF NC798V

NC798V was built and first registered on June 8th, 1931 in Buffalo, New York. This aircraft has had a long, diverse, and very interesting history. Originally registered as a Model 2, the factory converted her to a Model 7 before she was ever sold. On June 22nd of 1931 she was sold to the first owner, The South Texas Flying School near Houston, Texas. I often wonder what the original flight must have been like, flying from Buffalo, New York to Houston, Texas in June of 1931. In 1937 NC798V was used in the movie Clipped Wings (see link below for an except). In the early 1960’s she was converted to a “Crop Duster”. It was at this time she was designated as a Model 7-220 and the 220 HP Continental Engine was installed. After a few years as a “Crop Duster” she was converted back to a regular Fleet. For the most part NC798V spent it’s live in southeast Texas and southwest Mississippi. It passed through several owners who flew her on occasion and attended fly-in’s and airshows. I traded for her on July 28th, 2010. Later that evening very close to home in Colorado we flipped upside down during an emergency landing. There is a link on this page to the story of the trade, another of the incident, and another on the repairs that were made. I have enjoyed my time with her. Owning NC798V was the dream of a lifetime. I always wanted to own and fly a true “Golden Age of Aviation” biplane. It has been an honor and a privledge to own and fly her. She turned 80 just a few days after attending the National Biplane Fly In at Junction City, Kansas in 2001. At my age of 65 years the time has come to travel with my wife. After finding a good home for NC798V we will begin a search for something faster and enclosed for traveling. I am thinking maybe a Swift or an RV. The Fleet is a great airplane, but the time has come for me to hang up my helmet and goggles and begin a different kind of flying.

7. If you fly in commercially and after examination of the airplane we are not able to consumate a deal, then I will certainly get you back to the airport which you flew into. Negotiable.

8. It is my intent to complete a fresh annual inspection on the airplane at the time of sale. This normally takes a couple of days. If you wish please fly come early enough to participate in the annual inspection. As previously noted you will be welcome to stay with us during this time. Negotiable.

9. The price is negotiable and in some cases I may consider a trade. I am interested in cars, motorcycles, guns, antiques, etc. It is not my intent to trade as I am anticipating the purchase of another airplane, but if you have something then don’t hesitate to mention it. Negotiable.

In closing I would like to say, we are both pilots, and thereby friends! I have been flying since 1972 and have made many friends through aviation. We look forward to meeting you and swapping stories. This is of course about business, but it is also about flying and the preservation of a Grand Old Lady from the Golden Age of Aviation! She needs a good home and someone to love her. If that is you, then please contact me. I will do all that I possibly can to make this a good experience for both of us.
